(2-17-21) JEFF BLOG: The Antidote to All of the False Comparisons

For four-plus years, Americans have been force-fed an unprecedented stream of lies, distortions and non-sensical false equivalents from Trump and Trumpers — designed to polarize, cloud common sense, give political cover to those who would ignore the truth.

The classic example remains Trump describing “fine people” on both sides at Charlottesville and equating neo-Nazis carrying torches to those who rose in opposition, including 32-year-old Heather Heyer -- crushed under a white supremacist’s car.  

          It’ll take time and patience to wean Americans – those with open hearts and otherwise rational minds -- away from the highly infectious lies and false comparisons like these:  

          +++ Renaming streets and military bases and removing Confederate statues is about cancel-culture, and next we’ll have to remove monuments to the founding fathers.   Slave-owning at any point in history can’t be defended, but Jeff Davis and Robert E. Lee tried to destroy America to preserve slavery, long after most of the country and the world had finally condemned it. Thomas Jefferson and George Washington helped create America and the ideal we’re still trying to live up to – that all are created equal.  

          +++ Don’t fret Trump’s “perfect call” with the leader of Ukraine. Instead, look at Hunter Biden. Well, Hunter Biden shouldn’t have served on the board of Ukrainian energy company Burisma. That was sure to raise perception issues and questions. But how does it equate to the president of the United States trying to bribe another world leader for his own political gain?

          +++ Proud Boys and Oath Keepers on the one hand, Black Lives Matter protesters on the other. Equivalent? Really? Thugs used otherwise peaceful BLM protests to loot and burn, but white supremacists were incited -- by Trump -- to savage our Capitol and our very democracy. They tried to hunt down Mike Pence and Nancy Pelosi. BLM protesters sought to curb police brutality and fight for equal treatment. In other words, make our democracy stronger.  

          +++ We can’t convict former President Trump of high crimes because, according to Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy, he’s now “just a guy in Florida.” Comparing Trump to, say, a retiree in The Villages really does make you wonder how far the preposterous  equivalents can extend, and how to combat them. They go on and on, still.

          Joe Biden’s approach has been determined but gentle, based on patiently listening, then explaining facts and truth. Maybe that will work over time. Maybe more Americans can re-engage their common sense.
