By Paul Anger, 2nd vice chair
The Jefferson Parish Democrats will hold a Jeff Talk with Jan Moller, executive director of the Louisiana Budget Project, at 7 p.m. next Thursday.
Moller and the Louisiana Budget Project finished 2023 with ground-breaking work on behalf of parental leave in Louisiana, so that new moms and dads could take time from their jobs to care for new arrivals. The LBP also fought against irresponsible tax cuts and helped people on Medicaid keep their coverage as pandemic protections ended.
But 2023 was a cakewalk compared with what’s being done — or proposed — by Gov. Jeff Landry:
++ Landry will reject federal funding for food assistance for children next summer.
++ He’s also nixed a requirement that companies must create new jobs if they receive property tax exemptions from the state.
++ Landry’s transition advisers have recommended doing away with state income tax on individuals and corporations. And …
That’s just the start. Louisiana has embarked on policies that will tilt the state toward rewarding big business and short-changing most of its citizens, especially those with the greatest needs.
