JPDEC ANNOUNCES JUDICIAL ENDORSEMENTS FOR THE NOV. 3 ELECTION

The Jefferson Parish Democratic Executive Committee recently interviewed judicial candidates on the Nov. 3 ballot in an open forum and voted on which candidates to endorse, which required a two-thirds vote of members present.  JPDEC thanks all candidates for their willingness to serve. JPDEC’s endorsements:

STATE SUPREME COURT JUSTICE, DISTRICT 7: Judge Terri Love of the Louisiana 4th Circuit Court of Appeal. Among three excellent candidates, Judge Love offers unique background as both an appellate and trial judge. Her thoughtful demeanor and scholarship – she participated in a program at The Hague and got her Masters of Law (specialty in appellate law) from the University of Virginia – would be welcome assets on the state’s top court.

SECOND JEFFERSON PARISH COURT: Sharlayne Jackson-Prevost. She has experience in adjudicating cases as hearing officer for the Bureau of Administrative Adjudication and has served as a city attorney in Kenner traffic court. She vows to ensure fee assessments for traffic violations/small claims that are fair but not overly burdensome to defendants.

JUSTICE OF THE PEACE/FIRST JUSTICE COURT: We endorse both incumbent Vernon J. Wilty III and challenger Jerome W. Matthews Jr.  Wilty has served honorably and efficiently for 36 years and is pro-active in getting parties together before cases enter the legal process. Matthews brings added value as a criminal defense attorney with a range of ideas, including a court web site and a desire to educate school students about the court system.  The public would be well served with either candidate.

JUSTICE OF THE PEACE/SECOND JUSTICE COURT: Mark Spears Jr. He’s the incumbent and in nine months has made a positive impact – he launched a web site and moved the office to a more accessible location with more attention to handicapped individuals. Spears is a practicing attorney and former Jefferson Parish Councilman.

JUSTICE OF THE PEACE/SEVENTH JUSTICE COURT: Michele P. Holmes. She is the incumbent with six years of experience. Holmes grew up in the community she serves, and before becoming a justice was active in community volunteerism and served as vice president of the Marrero Housing Authority Board.

Early Voting Starts Friday, Oct. 16, through Tuesday, Oct. 27!
