The Jefferson Parish Democratic Executive Committee recently hosted a forum for non-judicial candidates on the Nov. 3 Jefferson Parish ballot. Candidates presented their qualifications and plans, plus answered questions.
After the forum, JPDEC members voted in open session on candidates to endorse, which required a two-thirds vote of members present. JPDEC found much to like in many candidatesβ plans and values, and we thank them all for their willingness to serve.
Here are candidates JPDEC endorses:
U.S. Senate: Adrian Perkins, mayor of Shreveport.
Mayor Perkins offers an appealing combination of progressive plans, educational background and military service. He is a graduate of West Point and Harvard Law School, and did tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. He emphasizes the need to attract non-traditional voters across the state.
U.S. 2nd Congressional District representative: Cedric L. Richmond.
Rep. Richmond has strong connections to Joe Biden and a key role on his transition team, has served as chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, and earned an appointment to the powerful Ways and Means Committee.
Louisiana Public Service commissioner: Allen H. Borne, Jr.
He would push for transparency in all meetings involving any commissioner and utility representatives. He would be an advocate for affordable, reliable, sustainable utilities and vows to maintain independence from utility lobbyists.
2nd Justice Court constable: Wayne J. Nocito.
He is the incumbent with a long record of public service and an honorable track record as constable.
For the U.S. 1st Congressional District race, JPDEC declined to endorse a candidate.
