The Jefferson Parish Democratic Executive Committee (JPDEC) met Tuesday night, Feb. 15, to interview and evaluate candidates for these City of Kenner offices – mayor, chief of police and City Council District One.
Democrat Dee Dunn, a small-business owner, pastor and longtime Kenner civic volunteer, earned the Jeff Parish Dems’ endorsement in District One over another earnest and promising candidate, Democrat David Weathersby.
Dunn said she would collaborate with both city officials and private investors to make quality-of-life improvements in her district -- including better roads and sidewalks, a full-service grocery and more attention to streetlights.
“I’m tired of District One being overlooked,” she said. “District One needs a leader.”
Also running for the District One seat are Democrats Freddie Davis Jr. and Jacqueline Brown-Cockerham.
For police chief, JPDEC recommended that Kenner voters give consideration to Keith Conley, who has served in law enforcement and varied public-service roles including Kenner city attorney and chief operating officer for Jefferson Parish. Conley and his opponent, Michael Sigur, are Republicans. Both promise to introduce body cameras to the Kenner police.
In the mayor’s race, JPDEC members made no recommendation for either of two Republican candidates -- incumbent Ben Zahn and challenger Michael Glaser, whose tenure as police chief is ending due to term limits.
Early voting for the municipal primary election begins Saturday, March 12; primary election day is Saturday, March 26.
