The Louisiana Legislature has less than a month to finish sending bills to the governor that could profoundly affect our lives, depending on how legislators answer these questions:
Is Louisiana ready to declare that a woman’s right to choose ends the instant an egg is fertilized in her womb, with criminal charges hanging over her and health-care providers -- regardless of health, incest, rape or other considerations that a woman should be able to weigh? Does Louisiana really prefer to expand predatory lending rather than raise paltry minimum wages? Is Louisiana OK with incrementally raising pay for teachers who are far below national and regional averages? Can legislators see past our one-year financial windfall and preserve revenue long-term to boost living wages, education, health care and other important services?
We’ll explore these questions and more 7-8 p.m. Thursday, May 12, in a Facebook Livestream with State Rep. Kyle Green, College Democrats of Louisiana Vice President Codee Jones, Louisiana Budget Project Director Jan Moller and Melinda Deslatte, research director of the Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana.
